How Can Anyone Help?
Committed people who are from countries that have a surfeit of wealth and are democratically sound, can assist our brethren in less fortunate countries.
Is it Practical/Achievable?
DiaCoCan Inc (derived from Diaspora Congolese du Canada) is a Canadian non-profit federal organization (354453-8). We are confident that if we start now and take 'baby ste's (a selected Pilot location). We can grow organically and exponentially.
Who Are We?DiaCoCan has been operating since 1998 to provide support and ministry to indigenous Congolese in the DRC and to Congolese ex-patriots in Canada. Our Initiative - Operation Education Congo (OEC) - will work together with Educations sans Frontieres DiaCoCan Kinshasa (ESFDK) to commence providing for the basic rights outlined.
What Learning Materials/Curriculum?
We have raised funds for learning material and services to be purchased from Education Without Boundaries (a Canadian Registered Charity) - that have been used successfully in similar projects in Angola - and has commenced organizing other materials and curricula from internationally-recognized distance learning programs that focus on life-based skills.
How Can DiaCoCan Help?
DiaCocan is preparing to commence a 2 year initiative in Kinshasa to cover the cost of basic education for a Pathfinder Project to approximately 150 Grades 1,2, and 3 students.
What are the Costs?
Education costs in the DRC average only $150 CAD per student a year compared to $7000.00 CAD per student per year in Canada. Even at such a low cost, it is almost impossible for many primary students in Kinshasa to be provided their basic education needs. The total initiative cost will be approximately $220,000.00 for initial set-up, teacher training, facilities, education supplies, medical supplies, and the first year of operation.
Other Benefits
Selected Canadian schools will also benefit from the funding applied for as the initiative is designed on the 'twinning' notion, where Canadian schools will commence cooperative, distance education for participating students to learn program and project management skills planning and developing an Emergency Preparedness Plan.
How Can DiaCoCan Provide Funding?
DiaCoCan is applying for funding from a number of Canadian government programs and also seeking support from Canadian companies currently doing business in the DRC. Additionally, we are sponsoring a number of fundraising events and seeking donations from the Canadian public.
